Have a decision to make? Looking for inspiration? Wondering which project you should focus on first? Here are 4 creative tricks that may help!
The following techniques are not divination tools (used to “tell the future”), they are methods for communicating with your inner guidance, higher mind, or subconscious desires. Think of them like magical cell phones that have your IG (inner guidance) on speed dial.
Some questions you might use them for:
Is moving forward with this venture (now) for my highest good?
What creative project or area should I focus on now?
How could I increase the revenue of my business?
How could I be a better relationship partner?
Would taking this job offer and moving across the country be in my highest good right now?
And so on…
Once you have your question in your mind (best to work with one question at a time), relax, take a deep breath in and out, clear your mind, then calmly use one of these techniques…
1. Grab A Book:
Simply walk over to your bookcase, close your eyes, pick any book your hand falls on, pull it out (eyes still closed), let it fall open to any page, place your finger anywhere on the open pages, then open your eyes.
Read the words under your finger. Read that section several times. Let those words bounce around in your mind for a moment. The message may not be the exact words on the page—it may be more subtle than that. What does that passage make you think of? What popped into your mind the moment you realized which book you’d pulled and/or what section you had opened to?
Jot down everything that comes to you as you’re thinking about that book and that specific section. If you’re reminded of the first time you read the book or the person who gave it to you, write that down. What do you think is the message you’re meant to receive from this?
Note: This method works best with either a large collection of books or specific kinds of books (fiction, poetry, self-help, and so on). Obviously (I hope), if your bookshelves are all filled with engineering textbooks, low-cal cookbooks, or foreign language dictionaries, your results with this technique may not be especially helpful. (Then, again, you might be surprised.)
“We all have a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be.” -Jane Austen
2. Automatic Writing:
Take out a piece of paper (or several) and a pen or pencil. (This works best if you can relax your hand, so choose a piece of paper you can lay flat, not a notebook or binder you have to hold open.)
Relax, take a few deep breaths, then think of the question you are asking your IG. Pick up your writing utensil and let your hand just start moving on the paper. Write whatever comes out. Don’t think about it, don’t edit it. Just write, write, write. Keep going as long as you feel the urge to do so. When you’ve finished, read what you’ve written and think about what it means to you. Jot down anything additional that comes to you as you’re reading. What message did you take from this? Write that down, too.
“Listen to your own voice, your own soul. Too many people listen to the noise of the world, instead of themselves.” -Leon Brown
3. Draw Some Cards:
If you own a tarot or oracle card deck (or if you’re like me and you own dozens of them) and you’re comfortable interpreting the cards, this method can be the simplest of all.
Get out your card deck. Relax and think of your question. As your hands shuffle the cards in whatever manner is easiest for you, keep your mind focused on your question. Whenever you feel it’s time to stop shuffling, or if a card or cards seems to stick out or “jump” from the deck, stop and set the deck face down. You can stick with the card or cards that jumped, pick one card or three cards, or whatever your intuition tells you to do at that particular time.
As you turn the card or cards over and look at them, what stands out about each one? What do you notice in the image? What does the image make you think of? What do the words on the card say? Are there any recurrent themes in all the cards you drew? Jot down your impressions of the card/s and the actual writing on the card/s. Put down whatever first pops into your mind. What is the primary message for you from this card or cards?
“Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing.” -Clarissa Pinkola Estés
4. Interpret Your Dreams:
Not everyone recalls their dreams upon awakening; if you’re someone who does, it may benefit you to keep a dream journal. First thing in the morning, while it’s still fresh in your mind, jot down the date and whatever details you recall from your dreams.
If you have recently been having a recurring dream, or if thinking about your question or issue inspired a dream, this is your subconscious mind communicating with you. Write down everything you can about your dream, then add what you think it means. What is your subconscious trying to tell you?
If you’re confused about the meaning of the dream, work it out like this: does the dream have an overriding theme or feeling, such as fear, danger, success or happiness? Now think about your question (for your IG); how does the theme or feeling of your dream answer your question? With fear? Feelings of danger? Success or happiness? Write that down in the form of an answer. Example: “My dreams are telling me that this potential venture makes me fearful…” (Or “…could be dangerous”…Or “…could make me happy” and so on.)
If you need more help interpreting your dream: list all the elements of the dream (example: “me, a horse, a storm”), list what those elements represent or mean to you (such as “fear” or “freedom” or “power”), and then use those elements to create an answer to your question. (More on dream interpretation in a future post.)
Write down your IG question and the primary message for you from this dream or dreams (ideally in a journal). As more insights come to you, add those to your notes.
There you have it: 4 creative ways to communicate with your inner guidance. The more you practice, the better guidance you’ll get, so pick the method that feels easiest to you and start using it today.
